We decided to take the Dark Hollow Falls trail on Sunday morning. It was a super steep downward trail of .75 of a mile and another .75 of a mile up the way we came. We hiked down until we reached the metal bridge. My bf didn't seem to care as much about it all as I did, but we walked beside water that trickled thicker and thicker until we got to the biggest fall of them all at the metal bridge. I tried to hold on to that feeling as we practically rock climbed our way back up the steep slope we came down. Once we reached the top, my bf deemed the trail, "The devil's butt crack." I'm pretty sure it almost killed us. Still, seeing the falls made it worth it. The photo does it absolutely no justice. I could literally lay across that big rock in the center, but I didn't because it would've been stupid to walk across slippery rocks at the bottom of a very steep trail. I didn't want to risk breaking any bones or getting wet.
My bf was done after this hike.with hiking, as long as I can get a good 30 minute break in between, I think I could do more in the same day. My bf's neck was hurting really bad, so we went to the lodge for brunch. They had a buffet for $14 a person. They served French toast, eggs, hash browns, sausage, bacon, biscuits, sausage gravy, cereal, bagels, and unlimited drinks. We definitely ate enough to get our money's worth. It was really good!
We bought some souvenirs at the gift shop, a coffee mug, a keychain, and a 3D cup for the kid. Lastly, we toured the Harry F Byrd visitor center. Then we decided to hit the road. We got home around 5pm, returned the car, and crawled home. My home was in a camping stuff cluttered, dirt crumb ridden state, but I hadn't the energy to do more than start laundry before bed.
Whew, what a trip! I had such a great time. I think we can do a better and cheaper local camping night when we bring the kid and the dog. My bf says we won't be able to afford to do it gain this summer, but I'm hoping I can prove him wrong around the middle of August. In July, were supposed to take the family in Nc to see the family in Maine. I certainly ain't camping out up there! It was a fun trip. I'm so glad we were able to do it.
