To claim our site, we chose a lot by pulling the ticket off of the post on the parking spot. I filled it out with my credit information and stuck it in the metal payment box on the samll ranger's house. The ranger stopped by to welcome us. On our way out, we stuck our validated ticket in a metal check-out box. Very easy!
Everyone had popup tents and there we were with our huge vintage pole tent. While we were trying to assemble it, two of the bars broke right in half from weight. We stuffed all of the pieces in the trunk of the car and bought a $90 tiny popup tent from the camp store. I found it very ironic and funny. Murphy's law.
Our hike for the day was Hawksbill Peak. I chose the upper trail, as always. It was super steep going up, but well worth it once we reached the summit. I was so proud of us for hopping out of a car and hiking straight up a hill! The view was satisfying and amazing. The hike back down was very easy. On our way back, my bf saw a huge turkey. That thing looked like a peacock it was so big! When he tried to take a picture, a couple of guys stomped through yapping and scared it away. Ah, adrenaline.
In the evening, I stopped by the Byrd visitor station to buy cheese, ketchup, and mustard. $6.35 for 16 pieces of cheese! I paid $12 for my small purchase. My bf bought some wood from the camp store. We tried very hard to start a campfire. Eventually, my bf just dumped the entire matchbox into the fire pit. We ate burgers and eventually gave up at building a fire.
The night was extremely cold and our tent was the size of a small closet. We used one sleeping bag as a bottom and the other as a top. I think we slept pretty well considering it was about 50* and we were laying on the ground around a bunch of strangers in the woods.
